April 22, 2012 Earth Day

 

  

On April 21-23, CENN, in cooperation with USAID, EED (Evangelischer Entwicklungsdienst) and the Ministry of Environment Protection of Georgia, organized a Green Campaign for schoolchildren to celebrate Earth Day. The Bulachauri Green Center hosted schoolchildren and teachers from Dedoplistskaro, Sagarejo, Telavi, Borjomi, Tkibuli, Chiatura, and Bolnisi municipalities of Georgia.

 

The aim of the campaign was to raise awareness among young people on issues of climate change and adaptation mechanisms and also to initiate cooperation with schoolchildren in the implementation of pilot projects.

 

The campaign was opened on April 21, with a youth conference organized at the Bulachauri Green Center, where schoolchildren conducted presentations on the following subject: How to become involved in the implementation of pilot projects?

 

On April 22, a greening campaign was organized in the village of Bulachauri, Dusheti municipality. A variety of species of fruit trees and flowers were planted on the territory adjacent to the Bulachauri Public School. The event was attended by the Ambassador of the United States to Georgia, HE John Bass, Deputy Minister of Environment Protection of Georgia, Mr. Giorgi Zedginidze, the representatives from USAID and the local authorities, schoolchildren and teachers from different regions of Georgia, as well as the local population and campaign volunteers. The participant schools were awarded with appropriate certificates.

 

Later on, a film screening and a discussion on the issue of climate change was organized.

 

The Green Campaign was implemented within the framework of the projects: Climate Change Adaptation and Disaster Mitigation (CCADM) and Strengthening and Engagement of Rural Women in Natural Resources Management in the South Caucasus Countries, with financial support of USAID and EED.
